Whimsical Mail Art Monday with Elina

I'm happy to share with you my latest stamped and colored Mail Art envelope:

Isn't this 'Whimsical Leaf Lady' stamp just so beautiful!

I decided to color my envelope with alcohol markers, so for avoiding the colors to bleed through the entire envelope I unfolded the envelope flat before starting. For stamping I used my stamping platform that makes the positioning of the stamps very simple. However, if you don't have one, don't worry; projects like this can easily be created without any special tools.

Starting with the largest image is always the safe way to go. If you at a later stage notice that you run out of space, you may change your plan on the fly and leave some of the smaller elements out. I planned to use some more stamps on this project, but soon realized that three stamps were just the right amount. There had to be empty space for writing the address, too!

For decorating the bottom of the envelope I used the simple stamping masking technique. The gray paper that I used for masking the Whimsical Leaf Lady was a page from a post-it notepad.

On the background of the Whimsical Leaf Lady image there are small circles. I replicated those on the background with my markers, connecting the upper decorative border with the main image.

Even if the envelope paper was not too thin, the marker color bleeded through. Not a surprise.

I did not want to leave the background that messy, so I covered the back of the envelope front with a self-made patterned paper. For this I used simple white printing paper, green stamping ink, and the 'Row of Scribble Circles' stamp.

I think the envelope looks now pretty good! The bleeded colors don't show through at all.

Let's Face It - Art journal Page by Fiona

Hello Viva fans!! Fiona here with you today to share a little art journal spread I created using some of Mary Vogal Lozinak's amazing stamp range over at Viva Las Vegastamps!

I have to say, I wasn't "in love" with this page until almost at the very end. It took a long time to come together. Maybe because I'm so used to creating with lots of bright colour and this time it was a lot more darker with the black I added to the top corners.

 I also struggled with liking my abstract faces I drew. I wanted to practice them, I see everyone really good at drawing faces and I know I suck at it so I thought maybe if I do them really abstract that would appease my inner critic ..... but alas, I'm not convinced I like them LOL

I do really like the stamped faces on this page. They are not stamped very clearly but that doesn't really phase me. I enjoyed highlighting them with my white marker to bring out their inner beauty.

I'll continue to practice my face drawing and maybe one day I'll be as good at it as Mary is .... cough cough I doubt it. the lady is a genius!!!

What I really like about this page is the message in the title "Let's Face it, We're all the same" I truly believe in equality and am very passionate about it so this works for me. I don't often get political in my art but for this page, I'm willing to make an exception

Hello you all! Shanna here and I have a tutorial for you it was suppose to be video but my webcam stopped working and apparently all my memory is being used up and I need to buy more storage!

So I did some photos of my art journal spread for you!

Here is what my spread looks like finished.

I love gelli printing and gluing the pages together to make mini art journals.  I used bubble wrap and the stamp Torn Paper stamp during the gelli printing stage. 

I gathered my supplies and then stamped the lady on this art journal page. 

I colored some chipboard pieces with black gesso before I added them.

I added the sentiment Nevertheless then glued the chipboard pieces on. 

I colored the chipboard pieces with some Metallique Wax. 

Added some scribble around the sentiment and called this page done. 

I love this stamp. She has this look about her and makes you want to look at her and think and explore your mind.

Mixed Media Art Journal: Persistence by Cheetarah

Hi all, it's Cheetarah here today and I would like to show you this art journal page I made recently with by now my fave stamps from the new releases at VLVS! The Leaf Lady is just so gorgeous, I've absolutely fallen in love with this stamp!! I had made an art postcard which I showed you last time and based on that design I made a bigger journal layout you see above. The size is about to fit an A5 journal. I used a lot of different media for this page and as usual a full list of stamps and media used is at the bottom of this post. First let me tell you how I created this journal page. 

To get the texture you see on the background, I used a bunch of left over pieces from Tim Holtz Mixed Media dies. I just stuck them on with matte medium and then used white gesso to create a starting base. To create the first layer of color, I sprinkled some Lindy's Magical Shakers in Guten Tag Teal, Bavarian Blue, Polka Purle and Yodeling yellow over the page and spritzed it with water. It gave a beautiful shimmering base. Then I went to dry brush some Deco Art Media antiquing green patina and metallic gold over the textured aria's to create some dimension. The specimen butterflies were stamped with Staz-On Royal purple on a piece of gelli printed deli paper which I adhered with liquitex gloss varnish. The Gelli paper gets a nice gloss and turns transparent so you get the design visible over your background. I stuck a few pieces of the gelli paper randomly on the page with the gloss varnish. I also stamped the butterflies randomly on the page with a darker blue color. The sentiment "Nevertheless, she persisted" was stamped on a trim of the background and I colored the edges with chipped sapphire distress crayon and antique bronze distress stain. It's popped up with foam tape. 

A close up on the texture of the background. I colored the leaf lady and doodle leaf the same way I did with the Art postcard, so with alcohol markers, but I also spattered the DecoArts Media patina Green and gold metallic over her hair to create more interest and texture. 

Before I adhered the page to my journal I added pops of color with Caran d'Ache neopastels (oil pastels) in turquoise and yellow.  A mixed media tip for you; if you have sealed your piece (like I did) with a varnish (I used the Liquitex gloss varnish) and you use oil pastels over it, you can use your heat gun to slightly heat up the oil pastels. The varnish protects the layers below it and the oil pastels turn a bit more liquid and you can easily smooth out the colors over your page with your fingers and not have streaky lines. 

Lastly I rubbed some distress stain antique bronze on the edges to frame the piece and called the page done! 

Hope this inspired you to create some texture with your left over pieces from your die cuts :)

Nevertheless, she persisted - Art postcard by Cheetarah

Hey all, it's Cheetarah here and I've recently received some of the gorgeous newly released stamps and my absolute fave among them is this gorgeous whimsical leaf lady by Mary Vogel Lozinak. I created a postcard using one of my gelli printed book pages that had a leaf design on it and some other great stamps that goes well with the whimsy of this stamp. List of stamps and materials used is at the bottom of the post. 

I colored the lady in with alcohol markers and it was stamped on Neenah classic card stock, cut her out and adhered her to the page. The butterflies were stamped with Stazon Midnight blue, as well as the sentiment "finding my way" - thought these two sentiments went great together. They are in the same lettertype as well which is great!  I edged the leafs with ZIG wink of Luna in green and the sentence "nevertheless, she persisted" with ZIG wink of Stella in light green. For the edges of the postcard I used chipped sapphire and twisted citron and blended those together with my fingers. I kept a blue green color scheme going, as we have in our current monthly challenge. You still have a couple of days to join in!

We're all trying to find our way in this world, and it's important that you keep on persisting esp. when you encounter defeat. This sentience is such a powerful one, it encourages to never give up.
