GO AWAY!!! Unless You are Taking Stamping to a Whole New Dimension...

Welcome to Viva Las Vegastamps! Susan here today with a twist on stamping. I love to stamp, but I am a total addict of molding and shaping things using Amazing Crafting Products. Today's project welcomes you to the wide world of dimension and a new kitschy jewelry piece using the "Unwelcome Mat Large #14973" image from Viva Las VegaStamps!

I have had this Unwelcome Mat stamp for quite some time and I did attempt to make a pendant with shrink plastic... but it came out very dark after the shrinking process. So that was a fail. With my molding adventures with last month's T!m Tags, a lightbulb went off and I thought, "what if I cast of mold of this stamp with the new Amazing Mold Rubber?"

 

I quickly and easily formed a mold box by wrapping and burnishing a couple layers scotch tape around the edge of the stamp to contain the liquid silicone poured on top. I prepared stamp by rubbing with vegetable oil to act as resist.

 

The detail of the Amazing Mold Rubber is so awesome and I couldn't wait to cast my new mold. I got out my Ranger Perfect Pearls, and with a dry brush applied the colors directly to the mold. I mixed up a small batch of Amazing Casting Resin {an opaque white 10 minute cure resin}, and poured into my mold. Like a kid on Christmas morning I couldn't wait to see the results...

A glorious and wonderfully colored FAIL!!! The type is backwards... YIKES!!!

So what's a girl to do??? Reverse the mold using Amazing Mold Putty {thanks DeeDee for the quick solution <3}. I will do this again using Amazing Mold Rubber {except due to the extended curing time and that I need to get more Amazing Mold Rubber... I opted to go with a quick 1/2 hour fix with the mold putty}. I mixed up a batch of Amazing Mold Putty and pressed into the silicone mold. Doing this makes the curing time take about twice as long, since the silicone cools the mold putty extending the curing process.

When fully cured I gently peeled the mold putty reverse from the silicone mold. It's not quite as detailed as the silicone Amazing Mold Rubber mold, but it's pretty good. I had to mix another batch of mold putty to add a border to hold the resin - yep the amazing mold putty sticks to itself so you can build all sorts of shaped molds... and make repairs and adjustments, too!

 

Now after a second curing of about 20 minutes... I'm back to coloring.  I again added various colors of Ranger Perfect Pearls applied with a dry paintbrush.

 

 I mixed up another small batch of Amazing Casting Resin and poured into this new mold.

Winner... Winner... Chicken Dinner!!! I wasn't going to rest until I resolved this issue. I drilled two small holes to hold wire wrapped gold loops and added lime green fun fur and satin ribbon to finish.

Welcoming a Kitschy Necklace...

Here's both versions side-by-side so that you can see the difference in detail between the two molding products. For extreme detail, the Amazing Mold Rubber wins hands down. I will finish the backwards version and wear out to survey how many people really get the joke. So I hope you are inspired to take your stamping to a new dimension...

Welcome to a Winter Wonderland... October's 12 Tags of 2013 Viva Las VegaStamps! Style!!!

Welcome to Viva Las Vegastamps! Susan here today to with my take on T!m Holtz' October installment of the 12 tags of 2013. I had to break the Halloween habit... and finally move on to the winter holidays. And since I am creating a winter version of this tag... I also am adding a splattering technique to give the effect of snow falling for the Craft Stamper Take It, Make It Challenge #5.

On a 4" x 6 1/2" section of off white cardstock, I created the marbelized background using Ranger Distress Paints (colors Weathered Wood, Crushed Olive, Dusty Concord and Antique Linen). I applied a second layer of just Weathered Wood and Antique Linen to tone down the bright colors.

I heat set to dry completely. Using an ink blending tool I applied Broken China, Weathered Wood and Iced Spruce Distress Inks around the edges. I completed the background by splattering with a brush Picket Fence Distress Stain.

I needed a frame for this month's tag technique and I don't have one for this purpose... BUT... I do have a lacy oval frame stamp (Doily #18849) that would be perfect. I could use Ranger Embossing Ink and a glue heat embossable powder to add the Distress Glitter... NAH! I want MORE DIMENSION. So I'm got out my Amazing Mold Putty and made a border mold of my stamp.

**WARNING** You need to thoroughly cover your stamp with petroleum jelly to protect your stamp - the rubber of the stamps and Amazing Mold Putty touching are reactive with each other. Watch closely and limit the time of stamp in contact with mold putty and remove it as soon as curing is completed.

As you can see here with stamp removed from mold. Some of the Amazing Mold Putty has stuck to stamp, which I cleaned off with soap and water immediately so the detail of my stamp is not clogged up and to stop any reaction the two compounds may have.

Now with a mold of my decorative border stamp - I filled it with Creative Paperclay® and let it cure. When paperclay is dried I inked and covered with Ranger Embossing Ink and heat embossable glue powder; then dredged in Antique Linen Distress Glitter. I went back with Vintage Photo and Broken China Distress Inks to add some depth and color to the edges.

I stamped several stamps (see list below) creating a collage scene using Weathered Wood Distress Ink and also Stone Grey Staz-On Ink. I really love how the Distress Ink just fades into the painted background giving subtle depth. I stamped snowflakes (see list below) with the embossing ink and applied the heat embossable glue powder; then applied a blue iridescent glitter to give the snowflakes shimmer.

Welcome to a Winter Wonderland...

The finishing touch was a Tattered Angels vintage icicle chipboard embellished with Distress Inks and a combination of blue iridescent and Antique Linen Distress Glitter. I accented Santa Collage #18933 with a little color using water brush and Ranger Distress Markers. Because of warping and to give the tag some stability to support the frame and icicles, I mounted the tag to chipboard with a section of Miracle Sheet cut to size and I embedded a sheer organza ribbon to act as a hanger from the top.

She Leapt for Joy...Ideas were Proliferating Like Rabbits

Ah! You've been there as a crafter, yes?  Days where the blank page mocks you.  Dares you to create.  And your muse is silent, offering no help.  And then suddenly, ideas begin to flow, welling up and hopping about like bunnies, out of control.  Bursts of color and energy leap onto the page, and you leap for joy.

It seemed like a good theme for an art journal page!

Several months ago, I made up some backgrounds in my Dyan Reavely Art Journal using Dylusions Sprays.  For this particular spread, I sprayed Dylusions ink spray in several colors, then used the reductive method of lifting some color by placing a paper doily down, spraying liberally with water and soaking up the moisture with paper towels.  When you lift up the doily, the color is lighter where the water was soaked up.

I used the Light Bulb mask to place a light bulb on each side and colored them with the Sakura Gellyroll pens.  Then I used the Montana Markers to glaze the page, allowing the color behind to show, while unifying some of the rougher places where color had leaked through from other pages.

I stamped the Wind-up bunny images and colored their heads with white gellyroll pen.

A while back I posted about a resin spill from one of my Amazing Mold Putty design team projects. The spill was painted with Acrylic Paint, defined with permanent marker, and stamped with the Dictionary Page stamp.  She looked to me like a woman leaping, and she seemed perfect for this page . 

I glued her down with E6000 glue.  


Now I needed something else with weight on the other side!  I took a 1x2 inch piece of Eco artboard and wrapped rubber bands around it.  I made a mold with Amazing Mold Putty and then made 5 different castings using a different color each time.  They made me think of oriental character and I think they provided a good balance down the page.

To finish, I used a permanent marker to write my saying.

The VLVS! Button Fairy Swap

When I joined the Viva Las VegaStamps! Button Fairy swap, I immediately knew which stamps I would use.  

Fairies are whimsical, honorable in their own way, but ever willing to trick you if they can.  The Steampunk Dogface fairy, with his dog-like aspect, lets you know  he'll test you, but once he's accepted you, he's loyal forever.  Doesn't mean he won't trick you, but mostly his tricks will result in steaks gone missing, and drool on your pillow, and he'll follow them up with toothy grins and slobbery kisses.

The Background

Using my gel sticks (which are the cheaper version of Gelatos), I swiped color onto the watercolor paper, and spread the color with generous amounts of water.  I added more color, then more water, smearing with both brush and finger until I was happy with the result.  

With the StazOn Saddle Brown I stamped the Tall Tree image several times across the page, re-inking after every 2 or 3 stampings.  Then I smeared a little more green gel stick around the foliage.

I tore a few strips of the Unryu paper and decoupaged it with Soft Gel where I most wanted to lighten (natural) or darken (brown) the color.  It's a bit thicker than the silk tissue paper, and also has these thick threads that create really cool patterns when you add the gel medium.

I repeated the process with the silk tissue rice paper building up texture and a glaze that gives the piece a hazy, mystical look.  

Once all the soft gel had dried, I added more gel stick where I wanted to increase the intensity of the color, and to highlight some of the threads from the Unryu paper (It's pronounced Oon-Roo or Oon-Doo).

Matte gel was used rather than glossy because I wanted to photograph the piece, and glossy shine is hard to do.  I was happy with the matte though, because it gave a softer, mistier  look.

The Resin Pieces

Although VLVS! has tons of wing stamps, I used a cloud stamp for the shape of my wings.  I wasn't interested in the detail of the image, just the shape, because I intended to use drywall tape for the texture.  I stamped the image onto a piece of illustration board, using both the front and back of the stamp, then made a mold.

I also used molds already made, one from rolled paper roses, a star-shaped piece from a shower curtain embellishment, a machine piece that I cannot identify and a piece of dried fungus (which I decided later not to use for this piece).

The Button Fairy and Flowers

I stamped the Steampunk Dog Face onto a piece of Unryu Paper, cut it out and colored it with colored pencils and gel pens.  Then after rolling some Creative Paperclay to a thin layer about the same thickness as my resin wings, I took the same stamp and pushed it into the paperclay, then trimmed around it.  

When the paperclay had cured, I used Soft Gel to adhere the Unryu image over the paperclay.  

I painted the resin wings with acrylic paint, and picked out the drywall tape texture with the gold leafing pen.

To assemble the button tail, first, I wove a piece of thin wire through the buttonholes to make it stiff.  Then I wove ribbon through, using it to tie the tail to the paperclay fairy.  I used heavy gel to stick on the wings, and then adhered the entire fairy to the background.

I used a touch of acrylic paint to color the flower castings.  I wanted to keep the translucency, so I just brushed on enough paint to add a bit of color.  

Putting it together

I laid my button fairy and flowers on the watercolor painting and moved them around until I knew where I wanted them to go.  I realized immediately that my painting wasn't large enough.  I wanted a stiffer support anyway, so I painted up a 9x12 300 lb. piece of watercolor paper with metallic black pearl.

Heavy gel medium was used to adhere the Button Fairy because of the weight. Because the flowers were resin-slick, I used E6000 to adhere them.  

I went back to the Heavy gel medium to adhere the whole piece to the 300 lb. watercolor paper.
